Faraday's Cage, Fitzroy

@food.fiend.melbourne

We visited Faraday’s Cage last weekend for a collab on a Saturday morning. The place was bustling with breakfast enthusiasts and people grabbing their take away coffee orders. The venue is absolutely stunning, sitting in a warehouse-style brick building in a residential street in Fitzroy. The dine-in tables are quite small, so there are a lot of them and you have a view of the kitchen and bakery area, where all baked goods and breads are made on-site.

We ordered 3 dishes to share along with a coffee and an orange juice. The OJ seemed to be freshly squeezed, which is a rarity these days – so tasty! The coffee was exactly what I needed on a Saturday morning. We were also given a selection of pastries to try with out drinks – a massive croissant, a cronut filled with cream and a rhubard Danish. The cronut was the stand out – the cream was phenomenal!

I ordered the house-made granola with the saffron poached pear – I was sick of seeing it in my Insta-feed without having tried it – and I was not disappointed. The granola had a delicious flavour and was nice and crunchy. The vanilla yoghurt underneath was thick and creamy and all the fresh fruits on top were super tasty. The poached pear was a knockout. If you visit Faraday’s Cage, this is my number one recommendation.

My friend had the baked beans. These came served in a skillet with poached eggs, topped with krispy kale & accompanied by two sliced on sourdough. She said that the beans had a fantastic flavour, but were a bit soupy and difficult to eat with a knife and fork. She ended up pulling some out on to her plate to eat with the eggs.

We ordered the hot cakes to share, but we were both so full from our first dishes, that we only nibbled at them. They were topped with mascarpone, berries and broken meringue. The broken meringue had a pop-rock consistency and was a nice contrast to the cakey consistency of the hot cakes. The flavours were all very complimentary, but it is a very filling dish. Only order if you’re hungry!

We had a wonderful time at Faraday’s Cage and the owner, Kim, is an absolute super star. She is friendly, attentive and goes out of her way to make sure that you enjoy your visit. The tables are tiny, but the meals are large and the atmosphere is fantastic. Thanks for having us, team J
