Our Little Ray of Sunshine, Sandringham

@food.fiend.melbourne

We were lucky enough to be invited to Our Little Ray of Sunshine on the weekend and adventured out to Sandringham to enjoy a delicious meal from their very extensive menu.

We ordered two smoothies to start: the Mango Passion ($9.50) and Banana Express ($9) which both came served in Melbourne staples, mason jars. The mango passion was delicious and packed full of flavour, but the banana express needed a stronger flavour. My partner was very hungover and his smoothie was exactly what he needed. We also had coffee, which was great.

We ordered three dishes to share, so that we could sneak in a bit of a cheeky sweet breakfast.

My partner had the Steak n’ Eggs ($20.50) which came served with so many sides - chilli onion jam, roasted pumpkin wedges, potato rosties, guac, kale, cherry tomatoes and hazelnuts! The potato was a bit overpowered by the guacamole, but the hazelnuts were a pleasant surprise (we though they were chickpeas!). The steak was cooked beautifully, be it well done, and had a nice peppery flavour.

I had the Spanish Bruschetta ($18.90) which was an absolutely huge serving! The spicy chorizo was delicious, but the spice lingered - beware to the spice adverse, as the guac was also spicy. The egg was poached to perfection and I liked that there were two different types of tomato on the plate. Only order this dish if you’re starving - I could not finish it!

We finished with the Tropical Pancakes (18.50) which was also a very generous serve. The cakes came out hot and made quick work of melting our generous scoop of ice cream on top. Luckily we made our photo shoot speedy! The lime and mango curd was absolutely delicious and was nicely paired with the raspberry puree and Persian fairy floss. My only feedback about these would be that the sauce should be poured over the bottom cake as well, so that it’s not too dry. The dish came with berries sprinkled around the side, but could have done with a few more to accomodate how much pancake there was.

Our Little Ray of Sunshine is a gorgeous venue in a primo condition, right opposite Sandringham train station. The staff are very friendly and attentive and their menu caters to most food needs. Jensen, the manager, was lovely and made sure that our visit was a positive one.

If you’re down this way for a beach day or looking for a new local, this is the place for you! Thanks for having us, team :)
